And what better way to quickly test a bunch of ideas than through a competition? Agriculture students who partner with individual farmers and raise the most food using the best ideas win.
Think about it: If engineering students can compete to build a better robot or faster solar car, why not challenge agriculture students to help farmers in developing nations improve their agricultural output? The best ideas win. And the winning students take home the profound satisfaction of helping others begin to hold their own futures in their hands.
That’s what Xtreme Farming’s 40-Acre Challenge is all about.
The 40-Acre challenge brings agriculture students together with farmers to help them plant and grow and sell more food. With technology, we can involve student teams both on site and back home to collectively develop the most innovative ideas imaginable.
It gets better. American agriculture students working side-by-side with the poorest farmers in the harshest of environments in the world offer the perfect background for a new genre of reality TV series. “Real” reality. That’s how we’ll pay for the competition – with revenue from broadcast TV – and we already have networks interested. Add to that the potential of webcasts and YouTube, and the 40-Acre Challenge becomes an idea that engages all Americans in finding creative ways to vanquish hunger and hopelessness.
The government of Tanzania is excited and ready to work with us. 15,000 acres of arable, irrigated farmland and hundreds of farmers are ready to become involved.
Are you ready?
It gets even better. With high visibility and an honorable goal, we can turn this vision into reality in an entrepreneurial way – a must for successful non-profits. We’ll rely on corporate sponsorships and donations for air transportation, video production equipment, computers and networks, satellite connections, trucks and fuel, food and medical supplies, even professional services. After all, what organization wouldn’t want to be associated with solving world hunger?
Best yet: Everybody wins.
Farmers will improve their productivity using sustainable agricultural ideas and advice. Their neighbors can immediately implement the best ideas and enjoy greater productivity. Developing nations will see an increase in agricultural output that will generate a healthier economy. Student-mentors can earn credits and recognition for participating in the Challenge. Agricultural schools will be recognized for their technological innovation and practical application of creative problem-solving, enhancing fundraising and enrollment. Sponsors will be known for helping solve world hunger in an innovative, effective, educational, and highly visible way. Solving world hunger will become a nationally championed cause for good. As best practices are implemented each season, the impact on world hunger will become profound.
This is a good idea.
We’re convinced Xtreme Farming will succeed because it will be built in partnership with the academic community, not through business, government, or non-profits. This is an important point of differentiation, and requires a unique business plan and marketing strategy. Our business plan is solid. Our schools will be recognized for their achievements. Our sponsors will enhance their reputations. As a responsible, entrepreneurial, experienced non-profit, we’re ready to make this happen.
We are looking to the academic community to help us organize the competition, participate in the challenge, establish accreditation, attract sponsors, and help fund the competition. The first institutions to join will help steer the project.
We need $20,000 per month for the next 10 months to make this happen. During that time, we’ll complete contracts, exchange letters of agreement, gather wisdom and ideas from our academic partners, fill our board with resourceful and committed people, and turn this from an idea on a napkin to an exciting and successful endeavor. This is a program that is simple and focused for maximum impact, and an opportunity that will resonate around the world. Join us in making it all happen. Xtreme Farming. Solving World Hunger One Farmer at a Time.
